might be a dumb question but anywho...

me and my buddies are interested in getting this... and to my understanding everyone is getting an IP address on the wug.

Is it possible for me to share my internet connection with them ? Are those ports allowed?

Sounds like a stupid restriction if you ask me. My area does not have adsl service available & it doesnt seem like telkom is planning to upgrade the infrastructure there anytime in the near future.

That leaves me playing this monopoly with wireless service providers like MTN, VODACOM, & Neotel (Which doesn't have proper coverage @ my place)

Telkom have nothing to do with it.
Its the Law. As laid out by the Department of Communications, and enforced by ICASA.

The "reason" for the restriction is that the state has a financial interest in Telkom, to protect it from free market forces they've instated laws to prohibit far more effective operations (like the WUG and private companies) from nullifying its relevance and monopoly. Outside of this there is very little moral or practical reason for enforcing this limitation.

On the upside these laws are changing (albeit slowly).

The single best thing for the SA telecoms industry would be to repeal most of the laws governing it and as a result dissolve ICASA. Somalia is an example where this happened as the result of a complete lack of government. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communications_in_Somalia

Personally I feel the WUG users should begin to assert some form of pressure on the illogical legislation enforced on South Africa.

With this new internet service we are getting from Mweb, I am sure there will not be any legal issues sharing Internet. We have a Mweb service at work and with one line, we have 50 plus internet users. If we share it over wug, it will be almost the same, just remotely.

I agree with quentinuys, All companies have internet to do business and have 500 to well I guess 5000 users using the internet and still have one service provider. I know there are rules and laws to protect the Service providers, but if we maybe talk to IS, Verizon or even Telkom, WUG net might even provide internet to all the WUG users as we are all still on one network, this all at a price though as Internet isn't free....

Okay, lets explain Jawug's stance on this...
If you offer internet services over Jawug's infrastructure, the license that Jawug operates under will become void.
Our license specifically states that there will be no commercial services offered over the network, and that includes Internet access.
Its got nothing to do with Telkom.

Doing this will put the Wug at risk. We work very hard to stay within the regulatory guidelines

Yes, I have done some research and found that once we do start the internet sharing, WUG becomes an ISP that operates under a different license.

Out of curiosity: if I wanted to connect both my home and office to the WUG for VPN purposes, would this be OK given the WUG's operating licence ? If this would be OK, can I assume that I would not be allowed to access the internet thru the company network?
